The common bluebottle belongs to the Brachycera family and is found all over the world, except in the Arctic. They are found primarily on flowers, mostly in flower umbels, and feed primarily on pollen and honeydew. They also eat fruits and other sources of sugary juice. Like many flies, their taste organs are located on their feet. Their eyes and wings are very well developed, and they have a proboscis as mouthparts. Through this proboscis, they secrete a digestive juice, which they then suck back in after some time along with the now pre-digested food. When they aren't feeding, they like to sit on carrion or feces. They are attracted by odorous substances produced during the decomposition and bacterial breakdown of protein, such as ethyl mercaptan, indole, skatole, ammonium carbonate, and various amines. There, they also reproduce by cloning, as they have lost the ability to reproduce sexually. Only parthenogenetic males are formed, which excrete identical copies of themselves from their proboscises.
