Nectaria dona Venus
Project type
Diorama
Date
April 2023
The nectar-producing Venus flytrap is a perennial herbaceous plant that needs its roots only for anchoring itself underground and absorbing water. The roots are unimportant for providing minerals, as it usually grows in very nutrient-poor soils that provide little. The plant obtains almost all of its essential nutrients from the living prey it digests in its nectar-producing trap leaves. The plant is also a phenomenon in other ways. It lives in symbiosis with the snail species Cochlea sacrificarium, which feeds on its nectar and pollinates the monoecious plants.
The snails also serve as nutrient suppliers for the plant, thus completing the cycle.
