Feminine vulpoculum
Project type
Diorama
Date
April 2023
The lady's calyx (Feminarum vulpoculum) from the Orchidaceae family is a typical plant of the Northern Hemisphere. They are characterized by their monopodial growth, meaning they only grow vertically and usually do not develop side shoots. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic (monosymmetrical) flowers are trifoliate, grow upright and arch overhanging. They form a pitcher that fills with strongly scented nectar, a digestive fluid that is very acidic (pH 3) and enriched with many enzymes. Overly greedy nectar lovers, who can't wait to lick the excess juice from the ground, can slip into the pitcher via the slippery edges. There, the digestion of soft-skinned prey takes place within just two days.
